What It’s Like to be an Intern at MSW Interactive Designs
My name is Taylor Dye and I’m an intern at MSW Interactive Designs. I am a rising Junior at Texas Christian University studying Strategic Communications with an emphasis in integrated Public Relations and Advertising. While receiving a classroom education is a wonderful opportunity, I see that as only half of what I need to do to prepare myself for the real world. What’s the other half you ask? Receiving hands-on experiences in the career field that I’m interested in. This will not only look great on my resume, but also allow me to gain important skills that are necessary to becoming successful. I was looking for a place to gain experience during my summer at the Lake of the Ozarks when I applied to work at MSW Interactive Designs.
Flash forward a couple months and I started my Social Media Internship at MSW in June after returning from a month-long study abroad program in Prague. I was fortunate enough that Mike and Sandy (Owners) were flexible with my summer schedule to allow me this opportunity. As a student, my summer is already fairly short and with my trip to Europe, it made it even shorter, so this amount of flexibility was very helpful in allowing me to make the most out of my summer. Since starting, the team at MSW has been very accommodating. From getting me set up to answering any questions that I had (and believe me, I had quite a few at first!).
With only a couple weeks of work under my belt, it’s already obvious that community involvement is important to MSW. They have formed relations with many local businesses at the Lake and the majority of employees attend weekly Business Networking International (BNI) meetings. Employees are also encouraged to volunteer for the community. I appreciate this about MSW because it shows how they care about others and that this business is ran by genuine people.
Blogging and social media management aren’t the only skills that I have gained during my time at MSW Interactive Designs. I have also gotten the opportunity to visit BNI meetings as a sub for one of our team members. This was a great way for me to meet business professionals at the lake and to learn more about what it means to be an active professional in a community.
Getting Started
When planning out my summer, I knew that I was going to live at the Lake of the Ozarks because I have family here, but I was a little worried about where I was going to work. I wanted to work somewhere related to my major and interests, but I wasn’t sure if there were any companies dedicated to social media and advertising at the lake. One Google search later and to my pleasant surprise, I found exactly what I was looking for! I reached out to MSW Interactive Designs after reading that they specialized in robust social media campaigns and website design. After exchanging a couple emails, I arranged to fly home for an interview.Flash forward a couple months and I started my Social Media Internship at MSW in June after returning from a month-long study abroad program in Prague. Company Culture
My first day with the MSW team wasn’t your average first day of work. With my schedule, it just so happened that my first day fell on the team’s annual float trip. This was a great way to meet everyone and fun events that MSW holds like this one shows what kind of company culture they have. For a team to work together work smoothly and efficiently, you have to all get along. The bonds that this team holds allows for a fun work environment and allows for us to come together to provide clients with personalized and effective solutions for their online presence needs. With only a couple weeks of work under my belt, it’s already obvious that community involvement is important to MSW. My Experience
During my short time at MSW, I have already received the opportunity to assist in writing many blogs and post on several social media channels. Through doing this, I have been able to improve my writing skills and learn more about both local and nationwide businesses. While I understood that social media was important for creating an online presence for a business before starting here, I now know the technical reasons behind why social media has a positive effect on a business website and its search engine optimization.Blogging and social media management aren’t the only skills that I have gained during my time at MSW Interactive Designs. Looking Forward
I look forward to the rest of my time as a Social Media Intern at MSW Interactive Designs. Not only will this experience look great on my resume, more importantly, I’ve learned what it’s like to be a team member and I’ve learned more about creating an online presence for a business. Not to mention, it’s my first 40 hour a week job (I’m really learning how to be an adult this summer). For all of your website and social media needs, I recommend MSW Interactive Designs to any business!
