GET TO KNOW US - MEET HEATHER BROWN

It's time to get to know your internet marketing team a little bit better!

We are continuing our blog series, Get To Know Us, this week! In previous blogs, MSW Interactive Designs has had the pleasure to introduce you to owners Mike and Sandy Waggett, Keith Lucas, Erin Burdette, Deanna Rogers Powell, Karen Horsman, Rebbecah Sansom, Laurel Leurquin, and Krysti Rice. This week, we are introducing another one of our rock stars, Client Services Specialist, Heather Brown.

Q:  What brought you to the Lake of the Ozarks?

A. I grew up in the Lake Area so my whole family lives around here.  Plus, I met my husband here as well, so his family is local too.  When, my husband and I got married we moved where our jobs took us. Ultimately, we knew we wanted to raise our families in this amazing community around our families, so we moved back before our kids started kindergarten.  This is a wonderful community with great schools and great people.  I couldn’t imagine raising our family anywhere else.

Q:  How did you get started in the internet marketing field?

A. I graduated from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication with an Emphasis in Marketing and Public Relations. In college, I had an incredible opportunity to intern with a public relations firm that had Lake of the Ozarks CVB/TCLA as a client.  I was able to really learn how tourism and the political sector worked from the inside.  It ignited a passion for that industry in me all those years ago.

After a couple year’s our jobs brought us closer to the Lake Area and I was then able to work at the Lake of the Ozarks CVB.  This opportunity reignited that passion that I developed years prior for the tourism industry and it was a perfect fit helping businesses around the Lake Area market themselves.  I stayed there for nearly 10 years and it taught me insurmountable amount things about marketing a tourism industry from a National to State to Local levels.  This knowledge and experience all led me to the desire to continue to grow my passion but to expand my existing knowledge in the area of Digital Marketing.

A few years later and two kids later while working a full-time job, I decided why not go back and get a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.  It was a dream of mine to complete the MBA process.  It rounded out my education tremendously so not only do I understand marketing but how to run a business from the ground up as well. This education was crucial in rounding out my knowledge of helping businesses market themselves from entry level all the way up to long standing companies.

My two degrees and experience with past jobs have led me to MSW Interactive Designs.  I knew this was going to be a perfect fit for me at this season in my life.  I love analyzing numbers to see how a marketing strategy affects customer reach and ultimately business for clients.  I have worked in this industry in some capacity for over 15 years so integrating my skills to solely focus on digital marketing is a perfect fit for me!

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. There are so many things that I love about this job!  First, the people I work with are top-notch.  They are very knowledgeable about this industry and honestly, I have never worked in an office environment that is so supportive and genuine.

Another aspect I love, is the opportunity to look at what clients are currently doing to market themselves. Then seeing what is working or what’s not and creating a path that will lead them to success.  I am a nerd for data which is crucial in knowing where you are at and where you need to be.

Q. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not at work?

A. I am a mom of three amazing kids so having time to myself is pretty much non-existent…. much less have a hobby ?? I will say, I am obsessed with my kids. I genuinely love being around them and seeing joy in their faces when we go do something fun.

Other than that, I love a good movie and hanging out with friends!

Q. Who’s your family?

A. I am married to my husband of nearly 12 years, Travis and I have three crazy awesome kids.  Our oldest daughter is 10, Coral, she loves gymnastics and is a spitting image of her father (even acts like him, oh my…help us all ??).

Our middle daughter is soon to be 9 in a couple weeks, Chesney.  She is obsessed with dancing.  She has been dancing since she was two and boy is she my mini me.

Then with moving closer to the Lake and finishing my MBA, it took us a little time to have our third child, Kastor who is 2.  Really the only thing I can say about him is that he is going through the terrible twos hard core right now.  On a positive note, he has been playing basketball since he could sit up.  This boy has one heck of a jump shot, that rarely misses.

Q. What did you want to be when you grew up?

A. My mom told me that when I was old enough to talk I would say a doctor.  I wanted to be a heart surgeon all the way up to my sophomore year in high school.  There is something about the medical field that amazes me still to this day.

Then, while in high school I joined many organizations that cultivated my love to speak in front of others.  I was in many contests that used my public speaking abilities and I flourished.  It sparked a passion that I didn’t know I had so I changed directions.  I went to college as a broadcast major but after one day of job shadowing a TV news reporter, I quickly realized that was not the direction for me.  I then, switched to Marketing which was the perfect fit!  It uses all my skills but also challenges me on a regular basis as this industry changes so fast.

Q. What’s something that very few people know about you?

A. Geez, I talk so much that most people know a ton about me.  I will say, most people don’t know that I used to play the violin.  I haven’t picked one up in about 16 years so playing it now is a not going to happen.  I love classical music and I started playing when I was in 4th grade.  I then used that as a talent when I competed in pageants throughout my child hood.  I still have my violin displayed in my basement to this day.

Q. What’s on your bucket list?

A. I REALLY WANT TO RUN A MARATHON!  I have always had this on my bucket list and it just hasn’t happened for one reason or another.  Having kids, going back to school and demands of my jobs have not led me to have much time to myself, much less time to train.  This goal takes plenty of time to train and commitment.  My job as a mom has always come first.  Now that we are done growing our family, I plan to take steps to make this a reality!

Q. Who inspires you?

A. I will have to say I have lots of amazing people in my life that have one way, or another shaped me to be the person that I am today.  I think God puts people in our lives at different times to be our inspiration for whatever reason he has planned.

However, if I must just choose one person, I would say a past co-worker Nancy, she is 84 years old and is utterly amazing.  She may not even know the impact she has made on my life and that fact that she truly is my mentor.  We may be generations apart, but her advice and wisdom always applied to me when I needed it.  This amazing lady, is more active than most people I know that are half her age and I hope to be half the lady she is someday.  She is a true pillar of what a leader should be with community involvement, the multiple organizations she participates in, advisory committees, church activities and numerous fundraising efforts are only scraping the surface of her contributions.  Plus, she still works 2 to 3-part time jobs at any given time.

I could go on and on, but I will leave you with my favorite quote of hers which is, “I would rather wear out than rust out”.  This keeps me motivated and to realize I am never to old to go after what I want, so never stop trying!

Q. What is your favorite social media platform and why?

A. I am constantly on Facebook. It keeps me connected in so many ways that still to this day shocks me.  I seriously love seeing what others are up to and the ability to have conversations with people I may not get to see face to face. Not to mention, who has time to hit garage sales these days, so I love shopping the online sales as well.  It truly is a one stop shop for information, which is no wonder they call it the king of social media.
Now, I will say, my guilty pleasure is Pinterest.  I love having all my recipes and ideas in one spot. I search Pinterest almost more than I use any other platform for information.  I have realized though, that I am a Pinterest fail when it comes to DIY projects.  I now know I have to pay someone else to make all the items I pin. 😃
